The PLATON project aims to develop an integrated sensor and data processing platform. The recorded 3D radar data is to be evaluated both on different time scales and spatially distributed using artificial intelligence. Thanks to this dynamic approach, safety-critical obstacles can be detected and high-resolution 3D maps can be created. In addition, a digital twin of the overall system is to be developed in order to generate representative sensor data at an early stage and to continuously monitor the system.

The functionality is to be tested through the interaction of several driverless transport systems in a real logistics environment. The 3D radar sensor network developed in the project is particularly data and energy efficient thanks to its adapted electronics and dynamically distributed computing power. By merging the data from many vehicles, the environment can be precisely recorded. In the future, this will enable closer and safer interaction between people and autonomous vehicles or robots.

Contributions from Fraunhofer IZM:
- Development of hybrid radar hardware with multiple cascaded radar chips for fast distance measurement in all spatial directions
- Additional imaging radar on same hardware
- Radar systems for safety applications (e.g., protecting people from collisions)
- Radar systems on an autonomous robot
