New on the market – MV 240 USB measurement microphone system 1/2" – greatly expanded range of uses and applications
Jan 31, 2026
The MV 240 USB measurement microphone system is a new high-end system with the highest dynamic range and the easiest way to perform high-quality measurements with a PC or, for the first time, with a smartphone.
Connection is straightforward and is made to a free USB port.
No further steps are necessary.
The MV 240 USB differs fundamentally from its predecessor, the MV 240 digital, as well as from all commercially available analog-digital solutions, both in terms of design and quality.
For example, synchronization via the time stamp of a GPS sensor has been implemented, among other things for pass-by solutions.
A special feature is the considerable expansion of the range of applications through combination with mobile devices such as smartphones.
In combination with a smartphone and the appropriate software, this creates a high-quality, mobile sound level meter.
When used as a measuring microphone, different microphone capsules can be used depending on the measurement task.
The new MV 240 USB thus opens up a wide range of new applications that were not feasible with previous analog or common analog-digital solutions for cost or functional reasons.
Equipped with a new, specially developed high-end low-noise capsule and new, integrated electronics tailored to the capsules (including an integrated AD converter), the MV 240 USB significantly expands the circle of potential users.
The capsule and amplifier are modular in design. This means that any capsules that comply with the 60UNS industry standard can be used, such as all suitable capsules from reputable manufacturers. This opens up a wide range of options. With the usual adapters, 1“ or 1/4” capsules can also be used.
Accuracy and simplified operation open up new application possibilities in areas such as industry, the environment, R&D, occupational safety, and even the education and training sector.
Current examples include use in weatherproof microphone units of the WME 980 series for environmentally relevant noise measurements.
Combining the WME 980 series with the MV 240 USB enables both expanded functionality and increased efficiency in continuous outdoor noise monitoring as well as stationary or mobile monitoring of ambient noise.
In addition to environmental and aircraft noise measurements, key areas of application include pass-by test benches for outdoor noise measurements in the automotive sector, which are important for official vehicle certification, vehicle development, and quality assurance in production.
Growing interest in the new possibilities offered by the combination with mobile devices has also been evident in the fields of study and training as well as in the R&D sector, e.g., at the Jena Acoustics Day 2025 at the Ernst Abbe University of Applied Sciences in Jena. e.g., at the Jena Acoustics Day 2025 at the Ernst Abbe University of Applied Sciences in Jena.
Access to cost-effective, high-quality measuring equipment and methods is essential for a sound university education for future engineers, technicians, and R&D specialists equipped with broad practical knowledge.
With the digital measuring microphone, every student, researcher, or developer has access to an affordable, high-end measuring device suitable for research and industrial use that can be connected to standard computing technology with Windows® or Linux®-based operating systems without any additional technical requirements, such as a digital sound interface.
Programming, measurement, and measurement evaluation are also possible in systems such as Phyton®, C++®, MATLAB®, or Labview® with the integration of the digital measuring microphone.
This provides a basis for digital laboratory measurement both at home and in the laboratory.
MV 240 USB 1/2" - At a glance
The 1/2“ measurement microphone preamplifier type MV 240 USB combines a high-impedance transducer with an adc converter.
• The output signal of the measurement microphone capsule is optimally adjusted to the dynamic range of the adc converter by an impedance converter and a preamplifier with a very low noise level and THD.
• One channel of a 32 bit analog-to-digital converter converts the lower level range of the capsule signal and the other channel the upper level range. A following processor combines these two level ranges to the one-channel 32 bit output signal, that represents calibrated sound pressure levels.
• The MV 240 USB converts sound pressure levels from 7 dB to 160 dB – more than the complete dynamic range of a typical 1/2“ measurement microphone capsule. The preamplifier supports the sample frequencies 48 kHz, 96 kHz and 192 kHz.
• Measurements up to 80 kHz are possible with 1/4“ measurement microphone capsules.
• For the use of the MV 240 USB no special hardware driver is necessary because it is detected automatically by the operating system and can be used with Windows, MacOS and Linux.
• The MV 240 USB is powered by the USB interface and generates internally 200 V polarisation voltage for the measurement microphone capsule that can be switched off when using electret measurement microphone capsules.
• The preamplifier is connected to the USB interface via a lockable LEMO® connector and a special LEMO® to USB adapter cable.
• Two integrated generators can be used to check the 32 bit processing of the following signal chain and to detect the reference value for a sound pressure of 1 Pascal.
