Sensors for seismic measurements on bridges and buildings
Mar 2, 2026
Large structures such as buildings and bridges tend to vibrate at low frequencies and with large amplitudes. Disasters such as the collapse of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge in Washington State in 1940 illustrate the drastic consequences that can result from disregarding structural dynamics principles. In addition to wind and earthquakes, less obvious events and processes such as goal celebrations in a stadium or construction work in the vicinity can cause a structure to vibrate and pose a safety risk.
Piezoelectric seismic acceleration sensors from PCB Piezotronics, Inc. can be used to detect such risks. With their high-precision sensor elements and integrated ICP® preamplifiers optimized for seismic measurements, the transducers measure even the smallest amplitudes and lowest frequencies.
The PCB Piezotronics Seismic Acceleration Sensors brochure presents various acceleration sensors and measuring cables that are useful for seismic measurements.
