SIL (Safety Integrity Level)

SIL stands for Safety Integrity Level and is a measure of the functional safety of systems, particularly in the automation and process industry. SIL defines the ability of a safety-related system to reliably fulfil its safety function under specified conditions and within a specified period of time. As the primary source of data on the condition of a process or machine, SIL therefore plays a crucial role in safety-related systems.

Risk analysis

While the condition of mechanical systems can be assessed according to the degree of wear and tear caused by heat or abrasion, for example, this is virtually impossible with electronic components. A precise risk assessment is therefore essential. There are various approaches to determining the failure rate. However, it should be noted that mechanical components wear out primarily through use, whereas electrical and electronic components wear out during storage.

The internally calculated risk also determines the required SIL level. A lower SIL level generally saves costs and usually offers a wider range of sensors and measuring devices to choose from.

Meaning of the SIL levels

There are four SIL levels (performance levels), with SIL 1 being the lowest and SIL 4 the highest. In principle, it is the operator's responsibility to guarantee the functional safety of his system.

- SIL 2: Medium risk and moderate safety requirements
- SIL 3: High risk and strict safety requirements
- SIL 4: Very high risk and extremely strict safety requirements

Why do sensors need to be SIL-capable?

SIL-capable sensors are required to ensure that the entire safety chain, from the detection of a problem to the execution of a protective measure, functions reliably and error-free.

- Reliability: SIL-capable sensors must meet high reliability requirements to minimise the risk of system failure.
- Fault tolerance: These sensors are designed to ensure safe conditions even in the event of a fault.
- Coherence: The use of SIL-capable sensors ensures that the entire safety-related system complies with harmonised safety standards.
- Legal and normative requirements: In many industries and regions, certain SIL levels are required by law to ensure the protection of people and the environment.

The implementation of SIL-capable sensors is crucial for the functional safety of systems in the process and automation industry. It ensures that safety-related systems work reliably and safely and helps to minimise the risk of accidents and damage.

SIL-capable sensors for weighing and filling applications

Althen offers various SIL-capable measuring systems, including for weighing/force and pressure measurement as well as measuring amplifiers. SIL-capable scales and sensors are essential in weighing to ensure precise and reliable weight measurements in safety-critical applications. These technologies help to prevent accidents, comply with legal regulations and ensure the safety of people, the environment and equipment.
