A new troublemaker: Murata's 6-DoF precision in an even smaller package
28.05.2024
In the development of positioning systems, the question increasingly arises as to whether the 2-antenna system can be dispensed with. To do this, you have to take a closer look at the options. It is immediately noticeable here that previous systems such as RLG or FOG gyroscopes are almost unrivalled in terms of the precision of the north direction. However, the disadvantage lies in the high initial cost, which makes them more suitable for large units such as ships or aircraft. Recent developments show that MEMS technology is approaching this area. Products with a FOG gyro integrate a MEMS accelerometer and provide values for pitch/roll of 0.1° and a "true" heading of about 1.0°. The MEMS sensor used in these systems is in the range of a few "mg", with a very low angular rate of the gyro. With the SCH16T, Murata has developed a small MEMS sensor with 6 degrees of freedom (Gyro+Acc.), whose accelerometer has such a high quality that it is the first time that it is possible to discuss another way to calculate position and orientation. At the Sensor + Test, we will show the new housing, our new nanoMoveIT Evaluation Kit, as well as a gyro compass with the new sensor.
