New Reflective Absolute Encoders for freely scalable Position Sensing

With the new absolute reflective encoder chips from iC-Haus, users can now advance into accuracy classes of optical position and speed sensor technology that previously could only be achieved with classic transmissive optical encoders. Designing a universal sensor platform for the widest possible range of applications is a revolutionary approach for the encoder technology that is on the verge of changing the design of applications in robotics and automation and LIDAR sensors.
Wherever a compact design and high mechanical tolerances are required along with high absolute position resolution (22 bits or more), iC-PZ can be employed. It is a highly integrated system-on-chip, suitable for both rotary and linear applications.

The chip has two optical sensors that scan the pseudo-random code absolute track and the incremental track of a reflective code disc. Thanks to the proprietary FlexCount® and FlexCode® functionality, the resolution and disc diameter can vary over a broad range. This comes in handy for applications where several drives with different code disc diameters are used, such as at the joints of a robot arm or in highly dynamic multi-axis systems. The position values of all axes working together in a robot arm can be synchronized particularly easily via the BiSS protocol. Robot manufacturers can use iC-PZ as a universal sensor platform for this purpose and easily select and parameterize it for the different diameters, from the robot foot to the gripper. This reduces the design-in effort to a minimum and simplifies product maintenance.

For encoders using a 26 mm diameter code disc, iC-PZ can resolve over 4 million angular values per revolution (22 bits). Position measuring systems with code discs of 9 mm diameter up to linear scales of 6.71 m length are supported. The blue LED is integrated in the 5x5 mm chip. Autocalibration and analog on-chip signal conditioning for offset, amplitude and phase shift simplify the assembly and ensure consistently high signal quality during operation. The lensless design results in a significantly lower assembly height compared to transmissive encoders and, above all, much greater mechanical tolerances in the adjustment of the sensor chip relative to the code disc (X (tangential): ± 0.5 mm, Y (radial): ± 0.4 mm, ? (twist): max. ± 2°, Z (air gap): 1 to 2 mm). Even code disc wobble, which causes eccentricity error, is compensated dynamically on-chip.
The available interfaces of iC-PZ provide maximum flexibility. Three out of the five output interfaces can be active in parallel: quadrature signals ABZ, analog Sin/Cos for processing with an external interpolation chip, UVW, SPI as well as BiSS/SSI.
