Special sensors for space applications

For the Space Industry, sensors are crucial to the success of missions and are subject to strict requirements. Depending on the application, sensors must be particularly compact and lightweight, have low outgassing and be suitable for extreme temperature fluctuations - both near zero Kelvin and at high temperatures near the engine.
Space conditions are characterized by high vacuum, which means that the sensors may only emit very small amounts of gas. This is not only important for space itself, but can also be relevant for test environments on earth: these sensors and their cables often remain in the satellite after ground tests, as their removal involves considerable effort. As they fly in the satellite, they must not contaminate the high vacuum by outgassing - even though they are not operated in flight.
In order to withstand extreme temperatures, it is essential that the thermal expansion coefficients of all materials and components used are precisely matched. Furthermore, the selection of piezo ceramics and crystals must minimize the risk of cracking at high and low temperature gradients. These factors help to minimize or eliminate signal interference, also known as the “spiking” phenomenon.
