TGS 5141

These high sensitivity carbon monoxide (CO) sensors are compact, fast and maintenance-free due to their long-term stability, they are also easy to implement.

The world's smallest CO sensor TGS 5141

With a diameter of 14 mm and a height of 5 mm, the TGS 5141 is the world's smallest electrochemical CO sensor. Thanks to the use of a unique electrolyte, the CO sensor does not require any water reservoir, reducing its size by around 90 per cent and its weight to just 2.5 grams compared to its predecessor, the TGS 5042.

The average life expectancy of the CO sensor is greater than ten years which makes it a great choice for use in battery-operated detectors. Combine this long life with the TGS 5141’s modest pricing and you are receiving great value for money.

The RoHS-compliant TGS 5141 fulfils the requirements of the UL2034, EN50291 and EN54-31 standards and is characterised by exceptional long-term stability and CO selectivity. The typical measuring range extends from 0 to 5,000 ppm and the response time, T90, is less than 60 seconds. The sensor’s current output is linearly correlated to concentration.

Maintenance-free operation thanks to its own power generation

As the TGS5141 self-generates the energy required for its operation and power consumption by the evaluation electronics is extremely low at just a few µA, virtually maintenance-free battery operation is guaranteed. The sensor can be used without restriction in the temperature range from -10°C to +50°C. Typical applications include compact carbon monoxide gas detectors for homes, laboratories, garages, carparks and mobile homes, multi-sensor fire detectors and portable CO monitors. Similar to other CO models in Figaro’s range, each TGS 5141 is marked with customised sensitivity data. This obviates the need for further calibration during installation.

Further sensors from the Figaro CO product family

The popular TGS 5042 and its derivative, theTGS 5043, with its extended operational temperature range are also characterised by high stability and durability. The models are suitable for both manual and wave soldering. Typical applications for the TGS 5043 CO sensor, which can be used from -40°C to +70°C, as well as the TGS5042 in the temperature range from 0°C to +50°C and TGS 5141, include fire and smoke detectors, other carbon monoxide gas detectors in industrial and domestic applications, garage and mobile home monitoring, portable CO monitors and CO displays on ships.

The TGS 3870 uses a different detection principle to measure CO. It’s a micro-bead metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensor, this operates based on changes in electrical conductivity when exposed to a target gas. By periodic application of two different heater voltages (high and low) this sensor can detect the three gases; carbon monoxide in the 50-1000 ppm range and both methane and hydrogen in the 1-25% LEL range independent of one another. The different heater voltages cause selective adsorption of the different gases onto the sensors’ surface. As CO, CH4 and H2 are all reducing gases, they will undergo oxidation at the surface, donating electrons to the sensor bead, resulting in decreased resistance within the measurement circuit. The change in resistance is measured and converted into an electrical signal, indicating the gas concentration.

This sensor has a very low heater power consumption, an average of 38mW, and is higly resistant to VOCs and siloxanes. It is ideally suited for use in residential multigas alarms.
